Railway Medicals
Hall Road Medical Centre conducts rail safety worker health assessments under the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers. Your employer arranges this occupational assessment, and it follows the current 2024 edition of the Standard.
Dr Sai Andey is an Authorised Health Professional (AHP) accredited to conduct Category 1, 2, and 3 railway medical assessments, at Hall Road Medical Centre as well as at Cure and Care Family Practice. The assessment process is the same at both practices.
What is a railway medical assessment
A railway medical assessment confirms whether a rail safety worker can safely perform their duties. It’s required for anyone seeking unescorted or safety-critical access to the rail corridor, and a valid assessment must be recorded in RIW before that access is granted.
The assessment follows a defined format set by the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers, and must be conducted by a doctor accredited as an Authorised Health Professional by the relevant rail operator.
Railway medical categories
Your employer or the rail operator will specify which category applies to your role before your assessment is booked.
Category 1
Required for workers in the most safety-critical roles, including train drivers and network controllers. It’s the most comprehensive assessment: medical history and questionnaire, full physical examination, cardiovascular assessment, ECG, vision and colour perception testing, audiometry, musculoskeletal screen, and drug and alcohol screening.
Category 2
Required for workers with a defined safety function on the rail network, and less extensive than Category 1: medical history and questionnaire, physical examination, vision testing, audiometry, and musculoskeletal screen.
Category 3
A baseline health clearance for workers with limited safety responsibilities who require unescorted access to the rail corridor: medical history, vision testing, audiometry, and musculoskeletal screen

This is a privately billed occupational assessment. Medicare does not cover railway medical assessments. The fee is $250 to $500 depending on the assessment category, payable in full before your assessment. In most cases your employer covers the cost, and you can claim reimbursement from them. Results are provided within one business day, suitable for RIW recording and employer requirements.
