Yellow fever vaccination
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease found in parts of Africa and South America. Many countries require proof of vaccination before you can enter, and some require it if you’ve transited through a country with yellow fever risk, even briefly. Requirements vary by country, so check Smartraveller for your specific destination before you travel.
A single dose of the yellow fever vaccine gives lifelong protection for most people. Children under 2, and travellers who are immunocompromised or living with HIV, may need a booster, so it’s worth discussing your situation with your doctor rather than assuming one dose covers you indefinitely.
Yellow fever certificate
Once vaccinated, you’ll receive an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis. Many countries require this certificate at the border if you’re arriving from, or have transited through, a yellow fever risk area. Since 2016, a valid certificate doesn’t expire, so you won’t need a booster dose or a new certificate for future trips unless you fall into one of the groups above.
Other travel vaccines
Depending on where you’re travelling and what you’ll be doing, your doctor may also recommend:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Typhoid
- Japanese encephalitis
- Rabies
- Cholera
- Meningococcal ACWY
Your doctor will work out what you need based on your destination, how long you’re travelling, your planned activities, and your existing immunisation history.
Booking your pre-travel consultation
Book a pre-travel consultation through HotDoc. Your doctor will review your travel plans, check whether you need any blood tests, and let you know which vaccines to book in for and when.
Aim to book 6 to 8 weeks before you leave, since some vaccines need more than one dose spaced weeks apart. Get your yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before you arrive in a country where it’s a legal requirement, to avoid issues on arrival.
Cost
Travel vaccinations aren’t bulk billed. Speak with our reception team for current pricing when you book your pre-travel consultation.
